Located on a high plain in a mountainous area in the center of western Iran, Hamadan is one of the oldest cities in the world. The city was known as Ecbatana in classical times and today significant parts of it are given over to excavations for antiquity remains to be found, the best instance of which is the Hegmataneh hill, below it there remains a Median and Achaemenid city. Another example to be perceived is the Ganjnameh whose rock carvings once thought to be cryptic clues leading to caches of Median treasure. Speaking of a treasure, there is some natural wealth in Hamadan as well: a massive river-cave system called Ali Sadr is a must-see attraction every tourist interested in Iran should explore. The good news for those who are keen on literature and history of thoughts, there are Avicenna and Baba Taher, a famous poet, Mausoleum to be visited in Hamadan too.
