Where is Takht-e Soleymān?

Located in the West Azerbijan province, the cultural and historical complex is an archaeological site dated back to Ilkhanid period. To visit Takht-e Soleymān, you have to start the journey from Tehran to Qazvin province. Before reaching Takht-e Soleymān, keep an eye to see one of the most incredible monuments of Persian architecture: The Dome of Soltaniyeh. Your next stop can be on the east side of Zanjan for a visit to Behestan castle. From here to Takht-e Soleymān you will have a short trip the highlights of which are Takab and a strange mountain called Soleymān prison!

Why to visit Takht-e Soleymān?

A travel to Takht-e Soleymān is a journey into history, so to speak. Apart from Takht-e Soleymān itself, you have the chance to visit some of the most amazingly unique cultural heritages. The most famous site is the dome of Soltaniyeh, which is said to be the 3rd tallest dome in the world. The massive dome will haunt you. But, even more strange, is the appearance of a Castle called Behestan. After being amazed by visiting these alluring constructions, there will be the time for the top highlight of your trip: a visit to Takht-e Soleymān. The spectacular complex is said to be constructed in Sassanid period. 

Top Sights in Takht-e Soleymān

Considered as the spiritual center of Sassanid state religion, Takht-e Soleymān ruins have earned a place in the Unesco list of world cultural heritages. The ruins are located in the northwest of Irans West Azerbaijan province. The significance of fire and water related to the site is indicated by a magically beautiful lake which is the center of the place and the Azargoshasb fire temple. The site also includes a temple dedicated to Anahita, which is the goddess of water in the Persian mythology.

Located in the Zanjan province, the dome of Soleymanieh is the mausoleum of Oljaytu, the 8th Ilkhanid dynasty ruler. The main building is an octagon, brick-made construction above which there shines an elegant, turquoise dome as a crown. A Travel to the area would not be completed without a visit to this Unesco-recognized heritage, which is described by Unesco as “one of the outstanding examples of the achievements of Persian architecture and a key monument in the development of its Islamic architecture.”

Situated on the west side of Zanjan province, in the Mahneshan county, the haunting Behestan castle soars above the Qezel Owzan river. At the first glance, the strange look of the castle will appear madly inviting. Bravely take an amazing adventure in exploring the castle and human-made caves.

Practical information

Takht-e Soleymān is a round-year destination. However, if you are looking for a travel to record memorable experiences, spring and summer are the best time for traveling to this area. From April until July the climate is agreeable and the area is lush and spectacular. But this does not mean that traveling in autumn and winter is not possible.

For traveling to Takht-e Soleymān you need your trekking shoes. If you choose the second half of the year, remember to bring an extra layer and warm cloth. So not forget your camera as you are going to visit astonishingly incredible historical sites and unique, scenery landscapes.
